Personal Information:
General Responsibilities:
Manage the operations of the institution's Men's Soccer Team
Likes: I enjoy everything about the job, being in control of a soccer program is very challenging and enjoyable. As it is a junior college it enable me to have a big part of these players lives, as I have a big role to play in whether they go on to college or not.
Dislikes: The most difficult part of my job is definitely budgeting. With the amount of travel we do budgeting is definitely one of the most important aspect, especially seeing as junior colleges do not have all the money in the world. I dislike having to motivate my players to do schoolwork although it is part of my job. They are here because they didn't have the grades so i sometimes feel like i have to babysit them, as well as coach them.
Hours / Attire: We require Mercyhurst NE Polos with pants, a suit or at times of practice and games a Mercyhurst NE tracksuit.
Pay / Benefits / Perks: I earn around $48,0000 a year in my position, I also help with admissions. Benefits include basic health and dental.
Education: I have a Bachelor of Sports Management from Mercyhurst University. Masters in Business Administration from Gannon University ·
Related Experience: 4 years as assistant coach with the Gannon University Golden Knights NCAA D2 program. I have worked simultaneously with local semi-professional club as assistant coach for the Erie Admirals of the National Premier Soccer League since 2009, winning the Atlantic Division and Keystone Conference twice (09,11), beaten narrowly in double OT in ’09 in the national final by Sonoma County (Calif.). I continue to work closely with the Admirals and help in developing the elite college talent in Northern America.
Salary Range: Salary depends on the institution and the program.
Turnover:
This is definitely based on results and graduation rate. As long as one of the two are being met the probability that you are held on is very high.
Tips for Students Aspiring Towards a Similar Position:
To start off do you coaching badges through local soccer clubs. Volunteer with any clubs or colleges and try progress through the age groups as quickly as possible, as to be a college coach you can't be dwelling in the younger age groups. Try shadowing a coach at a good program, no matter what the division, as volunteers are usually accepted. Be open to learning from anyone, learning what not to do can also be a huge help in the future. Make sure to also increase your network at all opportunities and be prepared to move!
Work experience:
What entry levels jobs did you work in order to advance to the position you have today?
I worked camps through GLS here in Erie, PA during the summer. Also doing the local Erie universities of Mercyhurst, Gannon, Edinboro and Penn State Behrend. My graduate assistant position at Gannon University was probably the most helpful.
